Burning Bread, 3:56, HD Video, Sound, 2011, Michael Kugler and Daniel Terna, Music by Dustin Wong

Burning Bread depicts the Jewish ceremony of Bi'ur Chametz, the symbolic act of burning bread that recalls the memory of slavery in Egypt and marks the beginning of the Passover holiday. As one of five vignettes belonging to an experimental documentary (Before After, 2011) about the predominantly Jewish and Latino neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Burning Bread is an essayistic portrait of the aforementioned ritual as it transpires throughout the course of a day. Produced in cooperation with the UnionDocs Collaborative.

Fading Colors (Cyan), 3:00, HD Video, Sound, Michael Kugler and Daniel Terna, 2011

A reflection on the relationship between memory and color, Fading Colors (Cyan) captures the color of cyan in sun-bleached and faded signage, murals, and objects such as fake plants throughout South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The viewer’s understanding of each image is periodically challenged by the introduction of a color chart, which exaggerates the cyan hue, and indicates exposure to the sun. This montage suggests a playful synchronicity that reveals these objects as both ephemera and as extensions of the neighborhood’s identity. This video is one of five vignettes included in Before After, an experimental documentary created in collaboration with Michael Kugler during a residency at UnionDocs (2011).
